(Born 1944)
A self- taught landscape painter, Dean Holland makes his home in Oakland, California. Although occasionally working in abstract or sculpture, Dean has found most satisfaction in landscape oils. Although he is particularly fond of the diverse California landscape, Dean’s travel adventures have taken him to more than eighty countries. But he was well into his 40’s before he began to recreate some of those experiences in oil paintings. Most of his inspiration comes from the early California school of landscape artists such as Percy Gray, Maurice Braun and William Keith. Dean’s paintings are of actual locations encountered in his travels whether on a hike in Marin County or in the Dolomites of Italy. He tries to capture the scene in oil, paying careful attention to the composition, natural colors and light. Often beginning with rough sketches while on-site, his landscapes are then finished in his studio.
