 Born in Vaughn, Washington on September 27, 1896, George Coblentz spent his youth in Tacoma, Washington. During World War I, he served as a topographical mapper and scout in Europe. Upon discharge from the Army, he attended the University of Washington. After moving to Los Angeles in 1923, he was a cartoonist for the Evening Herald. During the 1930s and 1940s, he was employed in the art department of MGM and other movie studios and as a designer of technical art for Hughes Aircraft. A world traveler, subjects of his paintings include scenes of Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the U.S. Coblentz died in Van Nuys, California on November 17, 1973.
