Mary Oppelt - Painter

(1909 – 1995)

Mary A. (Drohan) Oppelt, wife of the late Harry H. Oppelt, died at her home in East Hartford, on Monday, October 23, 1995 at the age of 86. Born in Hartford, she had resided in East Hartford for 66 years. She was employed for almost 30 years as a secretary in the Production Department of Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford. After retirement, she became very active in the Pratt & Whitney Retiree's Club, organizing many dances and other social programs, as well as holding several offices. She was a member of South Congregational Church for almost 40 years. Over the years, she served on many committees, strongly supported its many programs and services, and generally volunteered to strengthen the mission and ministry of South Church. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

Mary Oppelt was an accomplished artist, and was a charter member and president of the East Hartford Art League. On several occasions, her paintings were on display in the community. A consistent winner in the East Hartford Art League Festival, she received recognition and awards in other festivals. Many of her paintings are now displayed in the halls of South Church. She is survived by a brother, Richard Drohan of Farmington; a sister, Antionette Meisterling of Kalamazoo, MI; two nieces, Nancy Shortell of West Hartford, and Audrey Beck of Kalamazoo, MI.
